This article shares Jessica's harrowing journey battling anorexia and the crucial role Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences played in her recovery. Triggered by COVID-19 lockdowns and fueled by societal pressures, Jessica's eating disorder spiraled, leading to severe physical and mental health complications. Despite multiple hospitalizations, she was repeatedly deemed "not sick enough" for specialized care, pushing her closer to self-harm and suicidal ideation.
Finally admitted to Ontario Shores' specialized Eating Disorders Program, Jessica, reliant on tube feeding and battling suicidal thoughts, began her path to recovery. The program's structured schedule of therapy, planned meals, and emotional regulation, along with the compassionate, person-centred approach of the staff, provided the support she desperately needed.
Jessica's story highlights the critical lack of resources for adolescent eating disorders and the life-saving impact specialized programs can have. Her recovery, a testament to her resilience and the dedication of the Ontario Shores team, underscores the importance of family involvement, therapeutic interventions, and community support in helping people in their recovery journey. Recognizing the ongoing need, Ontario Shores has partnered with Kinark Child and Family Services to expand access to specialized care for youth struggling with eating disorders across the care spectrum.
